The Inter-American Dialogue
Viamericas is a leading global remittance company that is committed to donating a portion of profits to worthy projects that benefit our customers’ communities and families.
The Inter-American Dialogue engages our network of global leaders to foster democratic governance, prosperity, and social equity in Latin America and the Caribbean. Together, we work to shape policy debate, devise solutions, and enhance cooperation within the Western Hemisphere. Viamistad works in partnership with The Dialogue to provide coaches for entrepreneurial ventures with our participants with disabilities, among other projects.
5-Star Logistics Network (5-SLN) is the industry's fastest-growing, most dynamic and quality-focused cargo/freight forwarding network. The company generously contributes to funding Viamistad camps.
Zeno Mountain Farm runs annual overnight programs for people with and without disabilities, among many other programs including making films with diverse cast, and helped to found Campamento Kikotimaal in Guatemala, which later become the three camps that make up Viamistad.
Adisa helps improve the quality of life of people with disabilities and facilitate their inclusion into society. Located in Santiago Atitlan, Solola, where we host the camps, Adisa has worked closely with Viamistad to build relationships within the local community and share resources.
Camp Jabberwocky is a summer camp for children and adults with disabilities, including cerebral palsy, down syndrome, spinal bifida and autism. Viamistad's founder Sarah Peller as well as Zeno Mountain Farms' founders volunteered for years at Camp Jabberwocky. Some of the philosophies and visions for our camp programs originated at this oldest camp for people with disabilities in the world.
Hope Haven (Refugio de Esperanza) fabricates and provides specialized wheelchairs for people with disabilities all over Guatemala. Through the work of Dick Rutgers, they have provided standard and electric chairs for all of the Viamistad participants with disabilities who use wheelchairs. When we meet a person with disabilities who needs wheelchair help, we call Dick.
Transitions seeks to mobilize Guatemalans with disabilities through health, rehabilitation, education, spiritual development, leadership skills, social integration and employment.
Obras Sociales del Hermano Pedro is a Catholic charitable institution providing a home for a large number of persons with disabilities (mostly cerebral palsy) in Antigua, Guatemala. For many years, 6 residents participated annually in Campamento Kikotimaal. However, in 2013, the administration of Obras Sociales decided, without asking or informing the residents (all adults), that they would no longer attend. We never were able to find out the reason for the decision. Each year, we ask that they change their position but to no avail. This situation is very sad and unfortunately typical of institutions in Guatemala housing people with disabilities-- while they provide shelter and food, they do not necessarily respect other rights of their residents, for example the right to make decisions and determine their own activities and destiny. Viamistad continues to try to convince the institution to allow its residents to participate in our and other outside programs. These institutions solicit donations-- prior to donating, ensure that the institution respects the basic human rights of its residents.
